Program: Stacking Diagrams

Initial studies of vertical relationships between program elements. The transparency and separateness of like program elements begin to encourage collaboration.

The center spaces (entry, gallery, conference, lounge, etc) create a vertical expanse of collaborative spaces. Office space is spread out over the top two levels. Each zone of open office space has restrooms and an area for individual projects.

I am thinking each of the spaces should be further broken down and integrated into the building.

Program: Adjacency Study

Initial studies of program adjacencies. The office and 20% spaces have been subdivided to spread out over the building.

Site: Initial thoughts

The first site was chosen for its unique location in Franklinton. The neighborhood of Franklinton is where Columbus was first settled, but due to constant floods, the city expanded across the river, and Franklinton became sort of the forgotten part of Columbus' history. The chosen site is not currently used as a park although it does have green space.

The site is adjacent COSI - Center of Science and Industry - as well as the Scioto River, railroad tracks, and between two bridges. Being near and accessible to downtown as well as the highways for commuters is an important factor in the siting. Also, being located next to COSI could allow for a partnership between the two, as I believe the building should be accessible and open to visitors.

The second site was chosen for its location in Grandview, just outside downtown Columbus. Grandview's proximity to Ohio State campus, Battelle science and technology research labs, as well as the river and highways allows it to have a closer relationship with these institutions.

The site itself currently holds part of the abandoned Big Bear grocery store warehouses. It is located in a residential neighborhood on a predominantly construction-trade filled street. Small warehouses, single-story offices and many construction businesses line the street, as well as a park, the Grandview pool and a few condos. It is part of Columbus's burgeoning "Technology Corridor."
Tonight I'll post my site diagrams and analysis to further the site discussion.

I imagine programming the 20% space will become critical to the success of the project. In my view, the office spaces will have an equal square footage to the Idea spaces and will be interspersed throughout the building to allow for maximum collaboration. I think it is important the public have access to much of the buildings and the transparency of the open systems is prominent. Auditoriums for speeches and demonstrations, a gallery for display of ideas past and present, large conference rooms for impromptu group sessions.

Six-Word Thesis Propoal

In the same vain as Six-Word Memoirs

PROGRAM
mass collaborative open source technology company

SITE
ever-changing urban location surrounded by transport

TECHNOLOGY
series of constantly evolving new developments

Craigslist style Thesis Proposal

PROGRAM
An as-yet unnamed mass collaborative open-source technology company's new office building. Due to its nature, it has little need for individualized spaces or overhead. With its ideas on work environment, is the building even necessary?

SITE
The building is located on the outskirts of downtown Columbus, adjacent to two major highways and the river. The ideas of transportation and movement and exchange are critical to the company.

TECHNOLOGY
The technological environment is always changing, whether green technology or internet technology. The company will adapt to the changes, and so should the building.
